The 2004 Arkansas Head Start Annual Training Conference was held July 21-23,
2004 at the Peabody Hotel, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The conference attendance
was 161 participants.
Tonya
Russell, Director, Arkansas Human Services-Division of Child Care and Early
Childhood Education, was the keynote speaker for the July 22, 2004 Opening
Session. Tonya reminded the group that she will always be a Head Start
advocate. Tonya is a former Head Start Child. She began her affiliation with
Head Start as an Even Start Coordinator, for Child Development, Inc. in
Russellville, Arkansas. In 1996, she became the Arkansas Head Start-State
Collaboration Project Director. She served in this role for five years. Since
then she has served as Head Start Director for CAPCA Head Start and more
recently the UAMS Head Start Program. The Head Start community congratulates
Tonya on her new position.
At this session of group of Head Start Children from UAMS Head Start
entertained the group with a presentation of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham.
Marvin Johnson, Motivational Speaker, spoke at the Closing Session on July 23,
2004. The participants were moved by his motivational story as a former Head
Start child and his experiences with his disabilities. Many were moved by the
accomplishments he has made in overcoming his disabilities. He was an
inspiration to the audience.
The session ended with a wonderful performance from the Mississippi County,
Arkansas EOC Gospel Choir.
