This session will focus on using nursery rhymes and children’s literature to enhance the implementation of positive child outcomes throughout the day. Some time will be used to address the learning environment as a way to provide instruction in a variety of ways. All domain elements of the positive child outcomes framework will be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on observations, administrative support and on-going monitoring. Participants will have opportunities to become engaged in activities appropriate for use in settings for young children.

Autism Spectrum Disorders in Arkansas : Prevalence and Practical Strategies......................... Walnut Room

This session will provide new data on the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Arkansas derived from the Arkansas Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Project (ADDM) funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Data on the overall prevalence for the state as well as regional patterns will be shared along with information on age of diagnosis and cultural/gender variations. In addition to information from the ADDM Research Project, information will be shared on the learning characteristics of children with ASD in areas of learning, communication, sensory processing, social functioning and behavior. Practical strategies for use in the home and classroom will be discussed with actual examples of visual strategies and sensory materials available for demonstration. In this session, we will define “mental health consultation” and look at ways mental health professionals may be used in programs most effectively. The days of “two mental health classroom observations per year” are past and we will look at the research that points us to new practices. Also, discussed will be mental health professional credentialing, interviewing mental health professionals, finding the best “fit” with a mental health professional, needed consultant skills and areas of expertise, and consultant roles and responsibilities.
